Crown Lengthening Q & A

What is crown lengthening?

Crown lengthening is a common periodontal procedure that exposes more of your natural tooth or teeth. By cutting away excess gum tissue, bone, or both, Dr. Sethi can better access the tooth, which may be necessary if you don’t have enough visible tooth to support a filling, crown, or an implant.

You might also need crown lengthening if you have a tooth that is broken at the gum line, or if there’s decay underneath a crown or filling.

Crown lengthening can also be performed for cosmetic reasons. If you have a "gummy smile," crown lengthening can reveal more of your natural teeth to improve their appearance.

What happens during a crown lengthening procedure?

Before your procedure, Dr. Sethi performs a thorough oral examination. You might also need a teeth cleaning before crown lengthening.

At your crown lengthening appointment, Dr. Sethi numbs the treatment area with a local anesthetic. She makes an incision or a series of incisions in the gum line so she can pull your gum tissue away from the teeth. She removes bone or soft tissue to access enough of your tooth, cleanses the area with sterile salt water, and stitches your gums back together.

You may have some swelling or discomfort after the procedure. In that case, Dr. Sethi may give you a prescription for a special mouth rinse, pain medication, or special dietary or brushing recommendations.

What can I expect after a crown lengthening procedure?

Your gums need about three months to heal after a crown lengthening procedure. At this point, Dr. Sethi can install a permanent restoration, such as an implant or crown. Even if you’re not getting a restoration after crown lengthening, you’ll return to the office for a follow-up visit.

You can enjoy a new and improved smile for life with good dental hygiene habits. Dr. Sethi has helped hundreds of patients with this effective procedure, and she can help you transform your smile, too.
